The Met

Last  Sunday, I decided to check off one of the big tourist sites on my list. Art is one of my passions, so it was only natural that I wanted to check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art, home to some of the most prized pieces of art and culture in the world.

I got to the the museum at around 11:30 in the morning, and I didn't end up leaving until 3:30. Even after spending 4 hours there, I did not get to see the entire museum, it is massive. I started out in the Egyptian Hall, and it is probably one of the most extensive and impressive exhibits in the museum. There is a room that houses an ancient temple, and it's ability to make the temple look small speaks to just how huge this room is.

The Temple Room

It is set up to portray the artifacts in what would have been their natural environment, complete with a reflection pool and guardian statues. Here are some of the other interesting artifacts in the exhibit:

After the Egyptian halls, I explored some of the American wing, European Paintings, Mayan artifacts, African artwork, modern art and more. Here some of my favorite pieces:

A  cougar for my brother John!

                        A Tiffany Window                                                             Paul Signac

Matisse

Grand room for Medieval artifacts

Mayan Gold

                                   African shields                                                           Diego Rivera

Picasso

Georgia O'Keefe

One of the most fabulous instillations is found on the roof of the Met. There is a huge modern sculpture called "Cloud City" by artist Tomas Saraceno on the roof. It is an amazing geometrical piece that you can actually walk through and provides interesting perspectives of the amazing 360 views.

The view from the roof!

Clyfford Still

Jackson Pollock

Edgar Degas

Claude Monet

Paul Signac

One of Van Gogh's self portraits

This was one of the coolest pieces in the Museum - a deer made out of marbles of varying sizes.

I ended up taking over 300 pictures as the museum. The pictures above are just a few of the pieces that I really loved from my visit. It was an amazing experience and I hope I can go there again someday.
